About Bixby
Bixby is named for Tams Bixby, a chairman of the Dawes Commission, and grew up on the rich Arkansas River bottomland. Farmers grew cotton, wheat and alfalfa, switched to truck-farming vegetables in the 1930s, and many fields later became sod farms. The town adopted the nickname “The Garden Spot of Oklahoma” in 1941.
The river splits Bixby in two, with the original town center south of it. Bixby grew from 20,884 people in 2010 to 28,609 in 2020, and it’s the setting of S.E. Hinton’s novel Tex.
