About Broken Arrow

A Creek name and a railroad town

Broken Arrow is named for a Creek community in Alabama, Rekackv in Muscogee. The Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad sold the first town lots in 1902, and the tracks still run through the middle of the city.

Today it’s the largest suburb of Tulsa and home to the third-largest concentration of manufacturers in Oklahoma. Downtown’s Main Street became the Rose District in 2012, and every May Rooster Days, Oklahoma’s longest-running festival, fills Central Park on Main.

Fun facts about Broken Arrow

  1. The Muscogee (Creek) people became the first permanent settlers in this part of Indian Territory in 1836.
  2. Engineer Samuel A. Cobb surveyed and platted the townsite on October 16, 1902.
  3. The Katy railroad reached town on April 13, 1903, and the town was laid out on both sides of the tracks.
  4. Rooster Days started in May 1931, when local farmers had too many roosters.
